100th Day of School

Wow!  What a great 100th day in First Grade!  We had so much fun celebrating being 100 days smarter today.  The morning started out a little strange, though….the first grade teachers and many first grade students woke up 100 years older!  Hair turned gray, bones got creaky, and nightgowns and suspenders came back in style!  See for yourself…

My oh my they've aged quickly!

Zzzzzzz…oh no!  They've fallen asleep!

These twins mustache you a question!

We had lunch in the classroom to celebrate being 100 days smarter and doing well on our MAP and FAST assessments.

In the afternoon, we did 6 rotations that all involved the number 100.  The cup stacking was definitely a favorite!

Cups everywhere!

They did it!

A great team!

Counting By 5's

First graders love to move!  Which is great because movement is an important part of learning.  Below is a video of the students practicing counting by 5's while getting a little exercise too.

Phonics Fun: Oy and Oi

We had fun learning about diphthongs "oy" and "oi" today.  We started out by enjoying some Chips Ahoy cookies for a snack.  Next, the students came up with a large list including words like boy, coin, and loyal. We made pig snouts with our oi/oy words on them.  Cutest pigs ever! Oink! Oink!
This little piggy learned his oi and oy words!

No bacon here!

This little piggy loves to read Junie B. Jones!

Happy Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day

Today we celebrated Dr. Martin Luther King Jr..  We read a couple of different biographies and watched his famous "I have a Dream…" speech.  The kids then made equality wreaths by tracing their hands a bunch of times.  I was impressed with how thoughtful the kids' conversations were as we discussed the topic of segregation, equality, and Civil Rights.

Graphing

We have been working hard on learning all about surveys, collating data, and creating graphs.  The students had an opportunity to pose a survey question to the class, collect their own data, and create their own graph with their information.  The students were even introduced to Microsoft Excel and how it can be used to make charts and graphs quickly. It was a lot of fun!

Star Student

We had a great week celebrating our Star Student!  She loves horses and brought her awesome, light-up cowgirl hat to share as well as a special guest.
